Why do rats need controlling, and what damage do they do?
Rats carry a range of diseases, some of which can be fatal to humans.
Diseases caused or carried by rats include weils disease, salmonella, hantavirus, murine typhus, and
rat bite fever.
Anyone exposed to rat infestations should be aware of the risk of serious disease and take
precautions to protect themselves.
Living or working in areas frequented by rats is extremely dangerous.
For this reason alone, rats must be treated by a qualified professional pest controller.
Rats are extremely successful at colonising wherever food, water and shelter are available. For this
reason, they frequently take up residence in food outlets, around poultry housing, in loft spaces, and
around compost heaps.
Once they have become established in a human or livestock environment, they will contaminate
foodstuffs and food preparation areas with urine and droppings, undermine buildings and drains with
their digging and chew electric cables and plastic water pipes.
You may have seen a rat in or around your home, heard noises in the loft, attic or wall cavity, or found
rat droppings under the sink or kitchen units.
If rats are living in your loft space, or cavity wall, then they may well be nesting and immediate
treatment needs to be carried out.
Rats are often seen in the garden where they will easily climb onto a bird table or feeder. They may
also be living in your property, so you need to arrange a pest controller to carry out a professional
inspection.
Why choose us to treat your rats?
We have many years experience treating rat infestations in homes, pubs, restaurants, schools, farms
and horse riding and livery establishments.
Your rat problem will be quickly brought under control and you will be advised about preventative
measures to try and avoid it happening again.
Frequently we find customers have had intermittent rat problems for years, and have subscribed to
an expensive and totally unnecessary control contract. It usually takes very little investigation by us to
find the underlying source of rat problems, and with some proofing the problem is usually sorted out
permanetly.
An in-depth knowledge of rat behaviour and relevant qualifications are essential tools when dealing
with rat infestations.
Rodent control is always carried out with complete safety and professionalism, so you can be
assured that children, pets and wildlife will not be affected by our rat eradication methods.
Rat control in the UK is changing to the benefit of wildlife and the environment.
Prosecutions for badly or carelessly used poisons are on the increase, and ignorance of the law is no
longer an excuse. We pride ourselves at being at the forefront of rat control technology.
If you require advice on preventing a rat infestation, or proofing against rats, we can do this too.
We can also offer a completely non-toxic rat control option in certain conditions.
How are rats controlled?
In days gone by, you would employ a professional local rat catcher, but pest controllers today use
modern rat control products and methods. These are acceptably humane in their action and will
quickly solve your rat problem. It is imperative that rat poison is used correctly by a professional to
achieve proper control of the population, but also to protect people, pets and wildlife.
Incorrect use of rat poison can result in prosecution and large fines, so it pays to employ an expert rat
control technician with a good understanding of the different rat poison products and their effect
A good pest controller will also advise on preventative measures, so the risk of rat infestations can
minimised.
Rat biology
Rats eat nuts and seeds as their principal food, but will also eat insects and meat, so they are
considered omnivorous. Rats are very adaptable when it comes to food and where to find it.
Young rats are born hairless and blind in a nest made by the female. The 6-11 young are weaned at
3 weeks old, and are sexually mature at 3-4 months. The gestation period is 21-24 days and
potentially, rats can give birth every 28 days, so infestations can increase rapidly if conditions are
favourable.
