What is Red Mite and why control it?
The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, is a tiny blood sucking parasite of all birds, not just poultry.
They feed at night and when not feeding, live and breed in cracks and crevices.
It is because poultry has a regular roosting and nesting site, often with ideal conditions, that a red mite infestation proliferates.
A red mite infestation can be instigated by visiting sparrows or pigeons etc, or by the introduction of infected stock or second hand housing.
Symptoms of red mite infestation can be anaemia and feather loss, poor condition and blood spots on eggs. Egg production will suffer and the birds will be stressed and vunerable to other health problems, so it is important that red mite is controlled.

Once dry, the chickens can be put back into the hutch and over the next few weeks, the red mite will die off.
